The 170 m race of a driver at twice the 50 km / h speed limit to overtake another car ended in a devastating crash that left two pedestrians seriously injured.

Lim Wei Sheng, 27, was jailed for 15 weeks and banned from driving for four years yesterday, after pleading guilty to two counts of causing serious injury by reckless act and one count of causing injury by reckless act. A fourth related charge was considered.

After switching from the second lane to the five-lane Central Boulevard right-turn lane, Lim sped past the other car at an estimated speed of 91 to 92 km / h. Before he could back up, he lost control as he swerved to prevent another car from turning right in front of him at the junction of Central Boulevard and Marina Way.

His car collided with a metal bollard near the Marina Bay Financial Center and collided with a crowd of pedestrians during the afternoon rush hour on April 15 of last year.

In what Deputy Prosecutor Tan Zhi Hao said was one of the most horrendous traffic accidents in recent memory, two women were trapped under Lim’s car and suffered serious injuries, one of which required post-traumatic stress disorder counseling. and still needs surgery 11/2 years later.

District Judge Marvin Bay said there was a clear need to deter impulsive motorists from equally reckless maneuvers. “Given the careless manner in which the defendant operated his vehicle and the dynamics of the crash … it is fortuitous that there was no fatality in this case.”

A report from the Health Sciences Authority found that Lim had reached an estimated average speed of 96 km / h to 102 km / h seconds before the collision.

Pedestrians Song Jiaojiao, 37, Yang Jing, 40, and Adelene Ho Hui Yi, 35, were injured in the accident.

Ms. Song suffered fractures of the pelvis, ribs, knee and shin. She also tore her knee ligaments and is scheduled to have more operations next month.

Ms. Yang suffered shin fractures and breakdown of the skin, where the upper layers of skin and tissue are torn from the underlying muscle or bone, and required three invasive surgical procedures, including a skin graft.

Ms. Ho had injuries to her arm, hip, and leg and was granted a week’s hospital leave.

Citing the damage caused, DPP Tan sought a total of three months and four weeks in jail, while defense attorney Patrick Fernandez asked for a shorter jail term and two years of disqualification from driving.

Judge Bay granted Lim’s request to postpone his sentence for three weeks, in order to resolve personal and work matters.

With a bond of $ 10,000, it is due to court on October 12.
