SINGAPORE – Another male tertiary student ended up in court, this time for allegedly trespassing in hostel rooms at the National University of Singapore (NUS) to steal underwear belonging to female occupants.
Pei Shao Bo, who was a student at NUS, was charged on Monday (September 21) with five counts of burglary, four counts of robbery, and one count of possession of obscene films.
The 25-year-old Singaporean is said to have targeted the same room twice: on January 14 or 16 to steal a bra, and on January 19 to remove three other undergarments.
Pei allegedly broke into another room on January 18 to steal underwear.
It is said that between February 7 and 9, she entered a third room to steal a bra.
Pei is charged with trespassing into a fourth room on February 8, but court documents do not mention whether any items were taken.
When asked, NUS did not say whether Pei is still a college student or has been suspended.
“NUS takes a firm stand against any form of misconduct. The university cannot comment further as the case is now before the courts,” a spokesperson told The Straits Times on Monday night.
The case comes in the wake of other higher education students who were brought to court for alleged crimes committed on campus. They included NUS students.
One of them, 22-year-old Korean Kim Dohyung, is accused of assaulting a woman in a student housing unit on campus on March 21 last year.
Separately, Joel Rasis Ismail, 27, pleaded guilty earlier this month to three counts of insulting a woman’s modesty and one of burglary.
The Singaporean admitted to taking voyeuristic videos, including those of women using showers on campus last year.
The cases involving Joel and Kim are still pending.
Pei’s bail was set at $ 15,000 and his case was postponed until October 12.
For each burglary charge, an offender can be jailed for up to three months or fined up to $ 1,500.
And for every count of theft, a criminal can be jailed for up to seven years and fined.
