YANGON: Myanmar announced a stay-at-home order for its largest city, Yangon, after reporting a record daily increase in new COVID-19 cases on Sunday (September 20).

The order in Yangon, Myanmar’s commercial capital, takes effect on Monday and will force all employees to work from home. Schools were already closed under the previous lockdown measures.

The Health Ministry said on Sunday it had registered 671 new cases of coronavirus, without saying where. Most of the recent new infections have occurred in Yangon.

Myanmar has so far reported a total of 5,541 COVID-19 cases and 92 deaths. Infections have risen to hundreds of new cases a day in recent weeks after the coronavirus reappeared in the western state of Rakhine, after weeks without a confirmed national case.

National airlines announced that services have been suspended until the end of September.
