JAKARTA: A Chinese drug dealer sentenced to death escaped from jail on the outskirts of the Indonesian capital Jakarta by tunneling through the sewage system, police said on Monday (September 21).

Cai Changpan, 37, who was convicted of methamphetamine smuggling, dug a hole in his prison cell in the Tangerang area in sewage pipes and on a road, the Jakarta police spokesman told reporters, Yusri Yunus.

According to a cellmate, he had planned the September 14 escape for five to six months using tools from a construction project in the prison kitchen, Yunus said.

Indonesian Directorate General of Prisons spokeswoman Rika Aprianti told the media that the trafficker, who also goes by the name Cai Ji Fan, had scheduled his escape for the changing of the guards.

According to the Indonesian news website detik.com, he was sentenced to death in 2017 for trafficking 135 kg of crystalline methamphetamine. A police investigation found 70 kg of methamphetamine hidden in the chicken coop cleaning equipment.

Cai, police said, had previously escaped from a Jakarta police detention center in 2017 by breaking a hole in a bathroom wall.

No attorney or representative for Cai was immediately contacted for comment.

The police put him on their most wanted list.
