Like oil and water, a couple of neighbors just don’t seem to agree with their differences in smoking habits.

Upset that the smoking neighbor who lived in the unit below her refused to stop smoking by her window every day, a 68-year-old woman lost patience and poured water out the window four times in the last two months, Lianhe Wanbao reported.

The woman lives on the third floor of an HDB apartment along Bedok Reservoir Road.

In an interview with Lianhe Wanbao, the neighbor, a 64-year-old man, said that he initially thought the lady was washing her windows. It was only after the fourth instance in which she yelled at him that he realized that she had purposely poured water on him.

“She is so unreasonable, my hands were all wet!” he exclaimed. “I smoke in my own home, it’s none of your business.”

According to the old woman, the smell of secondhand smoke regularly entered the house, especially if the wind blew.

She revealed that the man was a heavy smoker to begin with, but had started smoking more frequently this year.

“He smokes in the morning, in the afternoon. Even when I wake up to use the bathroom at one or two in the morning, I can still smell the smoke, ”he lamented.

As a result of the smell, she and her husband, 72, wear masks even at home.

Her previous attempts to talk to him in hopes of finding a solution had also failed, he added. The man simply insisted that he couldn’t break the habit.

He revealed to the Chinese evening newspaper that he smokes more than 20 cigarettes a day. When asked if he would consider quitting, he said, “I have smoked for so many years, how do I quit?”

The man also noted that none of his three tenants had previously complained about their smoking.

Earlier this month, Rep. Louis Ng of Nee Soon noticed an increase in disputes over cigarette smoke since the circuit breaker was implemented, as more people were forced to stay home.

Ang Mo Kio MP Gan Thiam Poh previously mentioned that it was a challenge to prevent people from smoking inside their homes, saying: “We can only advise you to avoid smoking in your windows.”

Ng also advised residents to close their windows to prevent smoke from entering their homes.

In May, the National Environment Agency said it was working with the competent authorities and the respective municipalities “to encourage smokers to be considerate of their neighbors and to keep smoke away from windows.”
