Reguilón, 23, is a Madrid youth who excelled on loan at Sevilla last season, becoming an important part of a team that won the Europa League and finished fourth in La Liga.
The whites Coach Zinedine Zidane preferred Marcelo and Ferland Mendy as his left-back options, but great Bernabéu figures insisted that the club retain the option of bringing Reguilón back if he continues to progress.
The defender made his debut in Spain this month, starting with Luis Enrique’s side in a 4-0 win over Ukraine.
Reguilon’s impact on Seville, after first breaking into the Real Madrid squad in 2018-19, chosen by then-coach Santi Solari before Marcelo, caught the attention of several of the best European clubs.
He was close to joining Chelsea last month before they came to a deal for Ben Chilwell.
Both United and Inter Milan were interested, and Sevilla would have liked to keep him for another season, but they couldn’t compete financially.
Sources told ESPN that Reguilon preferred a new challenge in the Premier League and was open to joining United before Spurs agreed on terms with Madrid.
He was then convinced by the personal interest Spurs coach José Mourinho had taken in his signing, while the relationship between Florentino Pérez and Daniel Levy also helped secure a deal.
