Graphics cards based on Nvidia’s long-awaited GeForce RTX 3080 chip are in short supply in Singapore at its launch this weekend, which means some eager PC games might miss out on the first batch of cards.
Industry experts estimate there are fewer than 100 of the new cards in Singapore, given an initial shortage of the chip that promises to double the performance of last year’s version.
The GeForce RTX 3080 is the first in a new series of Ampere graphics processing units (GPUs) that Nvidia introduced on September 1. Cards with the new chip are scheduled to ship today in the United States and around the world.
The biggest draw is the big jump in performance for the same price: $ 699 for RTX 3080 based cards, such as last year’s model.
Cheaper and Mid-priced RTX 3070 Graphics Cards to Come Out Next Month 499 USD, and they will be faster than today’s flagship RTX 2080 Ti cards, which cost more than double at $ 1,200.
The big leap in performance, not always the case between generations of new graphics chips, has made many gamers eager to upgrade their hardware.
The new cards will also offer enough performance for the first time to play demanding games on a high-resolution 4K display, at a relatively affordable price.
Many players are already looking to discard their older cards, some only a few months old, with discounts at cut prices at sites like Carousell.
The good news, according to a PC components distributor, is that many more cards will hit stores in the coming weeks as card makers ship their own versions, for example with custom cooling fans.
As with previous generations of new graphics cards, the first to hit the market will be based on the chipmaker’s reference designs.
