SINGAPORE – Dentist Daniel Liew Yaoxiang, who is serving a jail sentence for his role in a Medisave scam, has been removed from the official dental register after a disciplinary investigation by the Singapore Dental Council (SDC).

You will not be able to practice after you get out of jail.

The professional dentist watchdog said Wednesday (September 16) that it had conducted a disciplinary investigation on July 27 and August 12 against Liew, who previously practiced at The Smile Division Dental Group.

Liew, a former national swimmer, faced seven counts under the Dental Registry Act for being convicted here of crimes related to dishonesty.

He had conspired to defraud the Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board of money from patient CPF accounts for treatments that were not performed.

Liew pleaded guilty to all seven counts.

The disciplinary committee noted that Liew’s conduct and convictions had brought disgrace to the dental profession.

On August 12, he ordered Liew to be removed from the dental registry and to pay the costs and expenses and incidentals of the procedure, including the costs of the SDC lawyer.

Liew’s removal from the Registry of Dentists went into effect Wednesday.

The SDC urged all dental professionals to be aware of the laws and regulations governing dental practices and to comply with the provisions of the professional code of ethics, as well as with the directives and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.

In May of last year, Liew was sentenced to two years in jail for defrauding 13 patients of $ 388,700.

Two others involved in the scam were also jailed.

Steven Ang Kiam Hau, the dentist who came up with the plan, was jailed for two and a half years in August 2018 and erased the dental record last September.

Yeo Meow Koon, a clinic practice manager, was jailed for 48 weeks in June 2020.

The case of another alleged accomplice, dentist Cecil Goh Chin Chye, is pending.
