SINGAPORE: A Malaysian man whose work permit was canceled in January stayed longer in Singapore hoping to find a job, but turned to crime to meet his daily needs after exhausting his savings.

On eight charges including robbery, dishonest misappropriation and cheating, Song Yin, 26, was sentenced on Wednesday (September 16) to two months and seven weeks in jail and three strokes of the baton.

Nine other similar charges were taken into consideration for sentencing.

The court heard that Song’s work permit for an unidentified job was canceled by his employer on January 14 this year.

He did not receive a special pass and was not allowed to stay in Singapore, but decided to stay because he wanted to find a job.

He was unable to find employment, but instead depleted his savings sometime in June this year, Deputy Prosecutor Ang Siok Chen said.

Song then turned to crime to feed himself. The majority of the crimes on all the charges he faced were bicycle theft. She sold at least three of them in Carousell for “quick money,” the court heard.

On July 12, Song came across a 66-year-old man sleeping on a bench on the empty deck of a block in Bedok.

He reached into the man’s open bag and pulled out valuables, including his phone and S $ 50 bills.

Song also used debit cards belonging to other people, claiming that he had found them. She used one of the cards to buy five drinks from a vending machine.

Several of the victims made police reports and Song was arrested on July 22. Among the objects recovered are the stolen phone and several bank cards.

He had stayed in Singapore for more than 190 days and admitted to doing so illegally.

The prosecutor asked for 15 to 18 weeks in jail and three strokes of the cane. The crime of staying in Singapore illegally without reasonable cause carries a mandatory minimum of three strokes of the baton.

The sentence reflects Song’s conduct “of committing different kinds of crimes while exceeding himself,” he said.

For staying in Singapore illegally, Song could have been imprisoned for up to six months and received at least three strokes of the baton, or a fine of up to S $ 6,000 had he not been beaten.

For each count of theft, you could have been jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.

For dishonest misappropriation, you could have been imprisoned for up to two years, fined, or both.
