SINGAPORE: Aljunied Workers’ Party Chairperson and Member of Parliament (MP) Sylvia Lim tabled a motion for adjournment to speak on improving fairness in Singapore’s criminal justice system when Parliament meets in October.

Titled “Justice for All: Improving Fairness in the Criminal Justice System,” the motion will refer to “deeper issues” raised by the recent acquittal of former servant Parti Liyani, the Workers’ Party said in a statement on Wednesday (September 16). .

“The intention is to discuss aspects of the criminal justice system and the challenges faced by people with fewer resources in navigating it. Specific suggestions will be made to improve the system,” the party said in the statement posted on its Facebook page.

Ms. Parti was acquitted this month of all charges following her conviction in March 2019 for robbing the family of former Changi Airport Group chairman Liew Mun Leong. Mr. Liew was her employer from 2007 to 2016 when she was laid off.

The Attorney General’s Office said Ms Parti’s acquittal raises issues that “warrant further investigation.” Assistant Attorney General Hri Kumar Nair is leading a review of the case.

Ms Lim’s motion was tabled on Monday for the next session of Parliament in October.

Parliamentarians can file postponement motions to raise matters of public concern after a call is made to end a session of Parliament.

However, this right to raise questions is assigned to one deputy per session. If there is more than one deputy claiming the right, the motion for postponement will be decided by vote.
