SEMBCORP Industries has signed a multi-year renewable energy agreement to provide a total energy solution to technology giant Google, with a focus on locally sourced renewable energy to support Google Singapore operations.

The deal is part of Google’s goal to have its data centers fully run on carbon-free electricity by 2030, it said in a press release Tuesday. It added that the Sembcorp deal is its first renewable energy deal in Southeast Asia.

The deal includes power generated from rooftop solar installations on about 500 floors of public housing. Under a collaboration with Sembcorp’s energy retail arm, Sembcorp Power, and its solar development arm, Sembcorp Solar, solar energy generated from the rooftop facilities will go directly to the electricity supply of Google’s operations, he said. the technology company.

He added that the agreement is a pioneer in the “seamless integration of solar energy directly into an existing power supply”, which Google and Sembcorp hope will help make renewable energy more accessible to Singaporeans in the future.

Sembcorp Industries Singapore, Southeast Asia and China (Energy) Director Koh Chiap Khiong said the motherboard-listed company can customize and scale its sustainability solutions to support the ambitions of RE100 members like Google.

RE100 is a global initiative that brings together more than 240 global companies that switch to 100% renewable energy.

Google said the green energy deal is “just a small first step,” and that it seeks to do more in this space in Singapore, Southeast Asia and throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

Shares of Sembcorp Industries were up 0.8 percent or 0.01 Singapore dollars at 1.20 Singapore dollars at noon on Tuesday.
