Personal mobility device (PMD) fires have been common, but recently (September 12), a woman’s power bank exploded and caught fire next to her.

The woman was sleeping in her condo in Tampines when the power bank, which was not charging, exploded around 1 am.

In a report in Lianhe Wanbao, a man said his wife woke up to the sound of an explosion and found that the power bank in their nightstand had exploded and caught fire.

The report said the woman used a wet towel to remove the power bank and threw it on the floor.

When he dropped the device on the Timber hardwood floor, the man added that the fire began to spread. The woman then made several trips to re-soak the towel and finally managed to put out the fire.

The man told the Chinese newspaper that part of the wood had been scorched and that the towel had a burnt hole. He noted that the total damage could have been much worse had his wife not noticed that the power bank was catching fire.

Earlier this year, the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) reported that the number of fires related to personal mobility devices (PMDs) nearly doubled in 2019, based on published annual statistics.

There were 102 fires involving PMD last year, a “sharp increase” from the 52 incidents in 2018, SCDF said. This figure has risen steadily since 2015, when only one PMD-related fire was reported.

On the other hand, fires related to electric bicycles (PAB) decreased from 22 cases in 2018 to 13 cases last year. – / ITGS
