Trump Holds Indoor Campaign Rally Despite COVID-19 Concerns

HENDERSON, Nevada: United States President Donald Trump held a Nevada campaign rally in an indoor venue on Sunday (September 13) despite warnings from public health professionals against large indoor gatherings. during the coronavirus pandemic.

Trump, a Republican, criticized his Democratic rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, suggesting that he was using drugs and was soft on crime.

“Biden wants to appease the domestic terrorists and my plan is to arrest the domestic terrorists,” Trump told an enthusiastic crowd. “If Biden wins, the mob wins.”

People in the crowd were sitting together and many were not wearing masks.

Biden has criticized Trump for holding campaign events that put people at risk for the coronavirus, which has killed more than 194,000 people in the United States.

“We have done an incredible job, we get absolutely no credit for the work that we have done,” the Republican told the crowd at the Xtreme Manufacturing facility, adding that his leadership had “saved millions of lives.”

Governor Steve Sisolak tweeted that “tonight, President Donald Trump is taking reckless and selfish actions that are putting countless lives in danger here in Nevada.”

“The president seems to have forgotten that this country is still in the midst of a global pandemic,” he said.

Trump called Sisolak, a Democrat, a “political stunt” and urged the crowd to “tell your governor to open his state.”

Trump downplayed the virus in its early stages and has alternatively accepted and ignored advice from public health experts, who encourage wearing masks and maintaining social distance to prevent its spread.

The president’s campaign described the demonstration at a department store in Henderson as an opportunity for supporters to exercise their rights to peaceful assembly under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

“If you can join tens of thousands of people protesting in the streets, gambling in a casino or torching small businesses in riots, you can rally peacefully under the First Amendment to hear from the president of the United States,” said spokesman Tim Murtaugh. it said in a statement.

Participants were required to take their temperature prior to entry and receive a mask that they would be encouraged to wear, the campaign said.

“I think we are relatively safe here. I brought a mask but I haven’t felt the need to wear it,” said Ronda Livingston, 64. “I’m not worried about that.”

Trump, who is behind Biden in national polls and in Nevada, has increased the frequency of his rallies in recent weeks, but has held most of them in open air venues or in large open aircraft hangars to help minimize the risk.

Biden has harshly criticized Trump for his response to the virus and promised a comprehensive strategy to combat the pandemic if he succeeds Trump in the White House.

Trump is in the midst of a western turn that will include a campaign stop in Arizona and a visit to California on Monday for information on the wildfires ravaging the West Coast.

Trump has criticized Biden for doing fewer events and traveling less than he did in the run-up to the Nov.3 election.
