SINGAPORE – Actor and singer Mohamad Aliff Aziz is facing possible jail time after he was found to be unfit for a mandatory treatment order (MTO).

Offenders who receive an MTO must undergo treatment to address their mental conditions rather than being incarcerated. It was not mentioned in court on Monday (September 14) why an MTO was not recommended.

The 29-year-old Singaporean pleaded guilty last month to a robbery count and an unrelated count of disorderly conduct in public.

This was not his first brush with the law.

In 2014, he was fined $ 2,000 for stealing two cell phones.

In the current case, the court heard that Aliff met Indonesian actress Raja Yunika Perdhana Putri, 32, in her room at the Studio M hotel near Havelock Road around midnight on June 7 last year.

He was there to discuss how she could help him advance his singing career in Indonesia.

Around 1am, Ms. Raja Yunika went to the second floor of her room to rest, leaving her bag near Aliff.

Before leaving the room, she opened her purse to steal $ 300 and one million rupees (S $ 94) in cash.

He woke up about two hours later and called Aliff after noticing he was short of money. He denied stealing the cash and she filed a police report the same day.

Assistant District Attorney Sarah Siaw said Aliff later admitted that he stole the cash because he “needed money.”

He then used the cash for food and transportation. Since then he has made a full refund.

In an unrelated case, Aliff was found to be intoxicated under the Orchard Towers Mall link bridge around 5.30 a.m. on November 10 last year.

A policeman who was in the vicinity saw him shouting loudly and gesturing at someone.

Sergeant Theodore Lee, 24, told Aliff to calm down and the artist obeyed before walking away, only to commit similar acts about an hour later.

This time, Aliff also walked to a nearby taxi and kicked its bumper. No damage was done.

He was arrested after having a fight with an acquaintance, the court heard.

Aliff rose to fame in 2007 after winning the Malaysian channel Suria’s version of Singapore Idol, Anugerah. He was in the spotlight last year for his divorce from Malaysian singer Bella Astillah and alleged romance scandals in Malaysia.

The couple, who married in 2016 and separated in May last year, have reportedly been reconciled.

Aliff will be sentenced Tuesday.

Criminals convicted of theft can be imprisoned for up to seven years and fined.

First-time offenders convicted of disorderly conduct in public can be jailed for up to six months and fined up to $ 2,000. Repeat offenders can be jailed for up to one year and fined up to $ 5,000.
