Rio Ferdinand believes Paul Pogba may need to sacrifice his attacking instincts and play a more disciplined defensive role for Manchester United following the arrival of Donny van de Beek.

The Red Devils confirmed the Dutch midfielder’s signature from frame to frame on a £ 40 million deal with Ajax earlier in the month, though it has created some confusion over how United will line up next season.

Ferdinand has suggested that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could do away with a traditional defensive midfielder entirely and instead commission Pogba to fill that role, with Bruno Fernandes and Van de Beek ahead of him.

When asked how United’s midfield might prepare for next season, Ferdinand said BBC 5Live: ‘Well that’s the big question, I think.

‘Listen, if you say you’re going to play with your best players in that midfield and you’re going to play three, then you’d say Paul Pogba plays the holding role and Fernandes and Van de Beek are the guys who are playing with that, a little more free and able to move and create.

‘Is that Paul Pogba’s best position? I would say not. But you have to look at what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to do. Do you want your best players on the field or are you talking about players who fit into a system?

“ I think that’s the intriguing part for me starting the season from the perspective of Man United in terms of the signing that they did, that player.

‘Is he going to be named as one of the best players on the team and is he going to play, or are we going to say that we want the system to suit the players?

“It is a great decision and that remains to be seen, but I still think that Manchester United will have some kind of movement and there will be additions to this team for the season, if not the first week, the second or the third.”

On how much Van de Beek improves the United team, Ferdinand added: “I think that remains to be seen. I think we have to wait and see, give it a little time.

“I think all new signings normally need time, Bruno Fernandes last season was probably an exception. But I got a good look at Van de Beek when he was playing for Ajax in the Champions League, not last season, especially the season before when Spurs got the final and Spurs beat them.

But in that race I thought it was very, very good. He impressed me very much and I think he showed some qualities that will be a great addition to the Man United team.

Is it the position I thought Man United desperately needed? I would say not. But we still have three weeks in the window, so we’ll see.
