SINGAPORE – Five 18-year-olds have been arrested for allegedly stealing and vandalizing mailboxes, police said on Friday (September 11).

Police officers from the Jurong Police Division were on patrol at around 3 a.m. Friday morning when they encountered five youths behaving suspiciously on the empty deck of Block 707 at Choa Chu Kang Street 53.

During the checks, officers found several packages in the teens’ possession that were believed to have been stolen from mailboxes. The young men, all male, were arrested for robbery with common intent.

The five teenagers are also believed to have damaged six sets of mailboxes in the area around Choa Chu Kang North 5 and Choa Chu Kang Street 53.

These mailboxes were reportedly damaged by a city hall employee around 5.30am on Friday, according to SingPost.

SingPost said in a statement that the locking mechanisms on the main mailbox doors had been tampered with and the doors were forcibly opened.

The affected locks were repaired and the main doors secured at 7 am the same morning.

Investigations are ongoing.

Those guilty of theft can be jailed for up to three years, fined, or both.

Anyone convicted of vandalism can be fined up to $ 2,000 or jailed for up to three years. For subsequent convictions, offenders may receive between three and eight strokes of the baton.
