SINGAPORE – An Indonesian maid was sentenced to four weeks in jail on Friday (September 11) on multiple counts of cash theft totaling more than $ 1,000 over the course of four months.
Rina Tilaar, 46, who pleaded guilty to three counts of robbery, wept before District Judge Ong Hian Sun, claiming she had been mistreated.
The court heard that Chew Ken Wee, 39, employed Rina on January 28.
At the beginning of your employment, you signed a declaration form stating that you had about $ 18 in cash in your possession.
Chew also remitted his monthly salary directly to his bank account in Indonesia.
Between February and April, he stole a bag of coins worth $ 150 and $ 500 in cash from Chew’s 66-year-old mother.
Between March 9 and May 19, Rina stole more than $ 270 in cash from Chew’s 37-year-old wife.
Rina also took a $ 15 card holder and a $ 20 stored value ez-link card from it.
Chew noticed that cash totaling $ 300 was missing from his wallet between mid-April and May.
The Singaporean and his wife went through Rina’s belongings when he left on May 21.
They found cash totaling more than $ 1,200 inside a bag of coins.
State Attorney Mohd Nasri Haron said: “As this amount was significantly higher than the defendant’s stated possession, (Mr. Chew) requested assistance from the police in reporting the matter.”
He added that after the police arrived, Rina admitted that she had stolen cash and other items from Mr. Chew and his family.
The court heard that she committed the crimes when the family went for a walk at night.
For each count of theft, she could have been jailed for up to seven years and fined.
