Attorney General not involved in former maid case

The Attorney General (AG) Lucien Wong and Deputy AG did not participate in any court decision in the case of former domestic worker Parti Liyani.

The Office of the Attorney General of the Nation (AGC) said this yesterday, adding: “This case was one of those that AGC usually handles and that did not require the participation of the AG or the DAG.”

It issued a statement in response to media inquiries about the case, which has made headlines since last Friday when the High Court acquitted Ms Parti of robbing Changi Airport Group chairman Liew Mun Leong and his family.

The AGC added in its statement that Deputy AG Hri Kumar Nair will lead the review of the case.

Mr. Wong, for personal reasons, had already recused himself from the review of this case last Saturday, shortly after the High Court ruling was released, the AGC added.

His statement does not detail the reasons.

However, the AGC noted that several years prior to his appointment as attorney general, Mr. Wong sat on CapitaLand’s board of directors while Mr. Liew was president and CEO of the company.

Mr. Wong left the board in January 2006.

He was appointed attorney general in 2017.

“AG Lucien Wong and Mr. Liew did not have a personal relationship, and this continues today,” the statement added.

Various comments online and on social media after Ms. Parti’s acquittal noted that Mr. Wong and Mr. Liew were on the CapitaLand board at the same time.

Parti, 46, who worked for the Liew family from 2007 to 2016, was acquitted of theft last Friday in a ruling that also raised questions about the motivation of Mr. Liew and his family to file a police report against the maid.

The AGC said Sunday it was studying the ruling to assess what additional measures, if any, should be taken in light of Judge Chan Seng Onn’s comments.
