In an age when seats and tables available to the public are in short supply, thanks to necessary social distancing, some students are provoking anger by allegedly leaving their belongings overnight to “cut” tables for themselves.
Images taken on Our Tampines Hub (OTH) by a Twitter user yesterday morning (September 9) showed bags and files strewn across multiple tables.
“Everything is busy at 7:20 am,” he said. “Students leave their things overnight at [Tampines hub] tables just for snacks [tomorrow]. “
Another user claimed that he had also seen people sleeping at night.
Within hours of its posting, the tweet garnered more than 800 retweets and more than 1,000 likes, with many netizens expressing their disgust and disdain for the students. Some even went so far as to threaten to dispose of students’ belongings if they saw them.
However, some netizens explained that the students could have arrived earlier that morning and had gone to breakfast since the lights of the facilities do not turn on until 7 am.
In response to AsiaOne’s inquiries, an OTH spokesperson said that users should be considerate and not leave their personal items when not using the Hub’s facilities.
“All unattended items will be removed by security officials for the benefit of our next user,” they added.
“We would like to encourage everyone to participate in contributing to the creation of a kinder and kinder culture among us.”
According to a follow-up tweet earlier this afternoon, authorities were seen hanging around “warning people not to leave their things unattended” and allegedly “berating some people for reserving seats.”
