A dramatic rescue operation was carried out Monday at a condominium construction site near Bartley Road after a worker injured his leg while performing troubleshooting work on a 40-meter-high crane.

Trapped by a moving part of the crane, the 46-year-old Bangladeshi worker had to be rescued by agents of the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) in an operation that lasted more than an hour.

In a Facebook post yesterday, SCDF said firefighters and specialists from its disaster relief and rescue team (Dart) were dispatched to a construction site on How Sun Drive at 4.25pm.

A team of four Dart specialists climbed onto the crane using a jack ladder and moved through the narrow boom of the crane to reach the injured worker.

Securing themselves in place, they established a descent system with ropes and pulleys.

A team member, cross-trained as an emergency medical technician, treated and bandaged the worker’s wound while suspended 40 meters in the air.

Meanwhile, another Dart team on the ground tied a stretcher to a rope deployed by the team on the crane.

Both teams then raised the stretcher to the injured worker.

SLOWLY LOWERED

After firmly securing him on the stretcher, a dart specialist on the crane clamped onto the stretcher and they were both slowly lowered to the ground.

The Ministry of Manpower told The New Paper last night that it is investigating the incident.

The worker, an employee of Capital Cranes Global, sustained a laceration to the inner left thigh and was taken to Sengkang General Hospital.

The developer of the workplace is SingHaiyi Huajiang Sun, a subsidiary of SingHaiyi Group, and the occupant is China Construction (South Pacific) Development.

It is the project site for The Gazania, a 250-unit wholly-owned condominium comprising seven five-story blocks.

Launched in April last year, it will be completed in the second half of 2022.

In a statement to TNP, SingHaiyi Group management said it could not comment further as the relevant authorities are conducting investigations.

Chief Minister Teo Chee Hean, who was Interior Minister from 2011 to 2015, praised the SCDF’s work yesterday.

He wrote on Facebook: “I am very proud of you.”
