Singapore – According to a survey by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), hiring slowed in the second quarter of 2020, but did not stop. Members of the online community commented on the report, stating that MOM needs to make sure its data is accurate, as many jobs created were temporary, such as Covid-19 related roles.

The survey, conducted in June 2020 by MOM’s Human Resources Research and Statistics Department, consisted of a study of 2,160 residents who were laid off during the first quarter of 2020. They applied the same methodology used in a previous survey of workers. laid off during the first quarter of 2018.

“Overall, the study found that hiring slowed in the second quarter of 2020, but it did not stop,” the MOM press release said on Monday (September 7). “Despite the weaker hiring sentiments, a good number of laid off workers went back to work.”

“Most of those who found work did so relatively quickly and did not suffer significant pay cuts,” MOM said.

The study found that 39 percent of those laid off earlier this year had returned to employment in June 2020, compared with 47 percent during the same period in 2018. “This suggests that the job prospects for laid off workers they were maintained, despite their job search being carried out in a much weaker labor market and within the period of interruption during which many activities were interrupted, ”said MOM.

According to the study, seven out of 10 laid off workers found new jobs in a month. PMETs – professionals, managers, executives and technicians – and those in their 30s and 40s were more likely to have found work, MOM noted. Meanwhile, about 53 percent possessed transferable skills that allowed them to switch to a different industry. The majority of 60 percent found a job that did not include a significant pay cut.

In response to the news, members of the online community called for more transparency about the details, especially the kinds of jobs that were quickly acquired by those laid off.

“You can get fired as a manager, end up being security,” Facebook user Marcus Shawn commented. “Can you trust the results of the survey?” asked another netizen. “Are the good jobs being filled and who are the ones who fill them? Would you mind revealing more?

Netizens mentioned temporary jobs such as those related to managing the Covid-19 pandemic and work as temperature assistants or ambassadors for social distancing.
