The Jalan Besar City Council has removed the cigarette butts that were dumped under the spotlights in the 531 Upper Cross Street block on Tuesday (September 1).
Stomper Brandon alerted Stomp to the incident and sent some photos of what he saw.
In the photos, cigarette butts can be seen thrown into the spotlight. You can also see a Cola-Cola lying next to the butts.
“When will these people learn? It’s a fire hazard,” Brandon said.
“This is the first time I saw this happen. I was eating nearby and I saw people smoking near the motorcycle parking area.
“Once they quit, they just threw their used cigarette butts into the spotlight.
“I think they need to be educated about the dangers of doing this act. It is a light bulb and when turned on at night it heats up and burns cigarette butts.
“This can start a fire and since it is so close to the motorcycle parking area, it really is a potential hazard.”
In response to a question from Stomp, a spokesman for the Jalan Besar City Council said: “The cigarette butts have been removed from the spotlights. We will also check and clean the area regularly.”
“We hope that smokers can put out their cigarettes before throwing their butts into the garbage can that is placed near the stairs / spotlights.”
“Everyone plays an important role in keeping our environment clean. Together, we can help make it a pleasant shared space for everyone.”
The Jalan Besar City Council also included photographs showing where the garbage cans are placed in that area to promote the responsible disposal of cigarette butts.
