Donny van de Beek has revealed that Steven Bergwijn asked him to join Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Van de Beek became Manchester United’s first transfer window signing in early September. The midfielder moved to Old Trafford from Ajax for a fee of around £ 40m.

United beat out a lot of competition for the 23-year-old’s signature. Real Madrid were a particularly strong rival in the race to sign him – with his agent confirming that he could have gone there had it not been for the pandemic.

However, van de Beek has now revealed that his international teammate Bergwijn wanted him to move to Spurs.

Speaking while on duty with the Netherlands, van de Beek said that his former Ajax youth clubmate: who joined Tottenham from PSV in January – sent him a message about his future.

He revealed: “I have to say he just texted me: ‘Are you coming to us or not?’

“We often have contact. We used to play together at Ajax for a long time and we’ve always kept in touch.

“I think we will see each other again soon.

“But I chose to join United. It’s a fantastic step and I think now is the right time. “

Van de Beek and Bergwijn were involved in the Netherlands’ victory over Poland in the Nations League last week, with the Spurs forward scoring the only goal of the game.

Van de Beek a ‘panic buy’

Despite Man Utd’s impressive capture of Van de Beek, one expert thinks it is simply a panic purchase.

Paul Merson recently claimed that United have too much depth in midfield to make van de Beek a player they needed.

He told the Daily star: “I do not get it. They have just spent £ 40 million in a position they are already strong in. And how does he play with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes? You have to have someone who can play the fork. “
