SINGAPORE – The Attorney General’s Office (AGC) will assess whether it should take further action in a recent case in which an Indonesian maid was acquitted of robbing Changi Airport Group chairman Liew Mun Leong and his family.
In a statement on Sunday (September 6), the AGC said it will study the judgment of the Superior Court Judge, Judge Chan Seng Onn. Judge Chan’s findings in the case in which former aide Parti Liyani was acquitted of all four theft charges on appeal, the AGC said, “raise issues that warrant further investigation.”
Parti, 46, who was represented pro bono by attorney Anil Balchandani, was initially convicted by state courts for stealing more than $ 34,000 worth of items from the Liew family while under employment.
In reaching his decision, one of Judge Chan’s findings, the AGC said, was that “there was reason to believe that the Liew family took the precautionary step to terminate appellant’s employment suddenly and without giving her enough time to pack, in the hope that he will not take the time to file a complaint with the Ministry of Labor (MOM) about their illegal deployment ”. They had asked him to clean the home and office of Liew’s son, Karl.
“Judge Chan further found that when the appellant threatened to complain to MOM after his sudden termination, Liew Mun Leong and Karl Liew filed the police report to prevent their return to Singapore to file a complaint with MOM,” the AGC said. Judge Chan also “did not believe the evidence of various members of the Liew family on various issues.”
Balchandani had told the court on Friday that his client will seek compensation from the Liew family, which will take into account his loss of income during the four years he was unable to work while the court case was pending. The attorney estimated the loss at “several tens of thousands.”
