In an unprecedented move for the company, Apple confirmed in July that it has a new iPhone in 2020. However, it is not all good news; the company also confirmed that it will come out later in the year than it had previously “released” its flagship phones.
If the company stuck to the normal release dates, we would probably have seen the iPhone 12 on Tuesday, September 8. Instead, the wait appears to be longer for this year’s new iPhone … and may even extend into October.
When can you buy a new iPhone? Also, when will the company introduce its new devices? Those are two different things, and below we are going to try to give you the best answers to those questions with the information we have so far.
When would we normally see a new iPhone?
Sept. 8 was originally our best guess for the iPhone 12 announcement. That was leaked by an established insider named ihacktu, and it matches what we’ve previously seen from the company in other years.
Apple typically announces its new iPhone on a Tuesday in early September. It is usually the first or second week of the year. Then it often puts the device up for sale 10 days after that, with pre-orders taking place in that period between the announcement and the sale.
That has been the case with almost every iPhone since the iPhone 5. Here are some examples:
IPhone release dates
September 8, 2020: iPhone 12 ???
Tuesday, September 10, 2019: iPhone 11/11 Pro / 11 Pro Max
Wed Sep 12, 2018: iPhone XS / XS Max / XR
Tuesday, September 12, 2017: iPhone X / 9/9 Plus
Wed September 7, 2016: iPhone 7/7 Plus
Wed Sep 9, 2015: iPhone 6S / 6S Plus
September 9, 2014: iPhone 6/6 Plus
September 10, 2013: iPhone 5S / 5C
Wed September 12, 2012: iPhone 5
October 4, 2011: iPhone 4S
Monday June 7, 2010: iPhone 4
Monday June 8, 2009: iPhone 3GS
Monday June 9, 2008: iPhone 3G
January 9, 2007: iPhone
All that said, Apple hasn’t told us specifically when the event will be, and the company typically gives us at least two weeks’ notice on when to expect the announcement of the new iPhone.
There’s a slim chance that Apple could unveil the new phone on September 8 without an event preview, but that’s highly unlikely as the company will surely want a lot of attention for its event.
Also, the company has officially confirmed that there will be a delay in 2020. So what has Apple said publicly?
What did Apple say?
During Apple’s third quarter 2020 earnings call, Apple’s CFO Luca Maestri specifically referred to a new iPhone and clarified that the company expects its launch to be delayed in 2020 compared to previous years.
Maestri said: “As you know, last year we started selling iPhones at the end of September. This year, we expect the supply to be available a few weeks later. “
This is unheard of as Apple has never commented on the existence of a new iPhone before, but the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the company’s finances, and future finances with an iPhone 12 delay on the horizon, have changed. things a bit.
Later, Maestri clarified “I said in my comments that a year ago we launched a new iPhone at the end of September. And I said that this year, the supply of the new product will be a few weeks later. “
Apple didn’t specifically name the iPhone 12 device, but this has essentially confirmed that the new range of iPhones we were hoping to launch now will be delayed until at least sometime later in 2020.
At first, we thought this could be a very specific terminology chosen by Apple. We believed that it wouldn’t affect when you see the company unveil the announced iPhone 12 range on stage and instead it’s about when you can buy the phone.
However, that doesn’t seem to be the case, and we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see the phones unveiled.
When do we expect the iPhone 12 now?
A variety of rumors have suggested that October 2020 is when we are likely to see the new iPhones. We previously expected to see the devices announced in September, but that seems less and less likely now.
Maestri’s terminology of “a few” weeks suggests that it is delayed at least three weeks. That probably means that you won’t be able to buy the phone until at least mid-October (the iPhone 11 series was released on September 20 of last year).
It is difficult to predict an exact date, as these are unprecedented times and do not coincide with Apple’s usual time. A Bloomberg report has suggested that Apple may also stagger the launch date of its products after revealing them.
New Apple Dates Adjusted! Apple Watch and iPad- Via press release- Week 37 w / c September 7 iPhone Event 12- Week 42 w / c October 12 iPhone 12 Devices – Pre-order week 42 w / c October 12- Shipping week 43 w / c Oct 19 iPhone 12 Pro devices: Pre-order and shipping in November (no exact date yet)August 12, 2020
Whistleblower Jon Prosser, who has been precise on product announcement dates for the iPhone SE, iPad Pro, and some other Apple products, has said that he thinks we will see the event in the week of October 12.
If that’s true, we’d expect it to be October 13, as Apple typically launches on Tuesdays. MacOtakara believes that an event will take place at the end of October.
Prosser also believes that pre-orders for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will open later that week. We estimate that Apple would follow its usual pre-order opening format on the Friday after the announcement, so it would be October 16.
Information from Prosser also states that the products will begin shipping the week of October 19, while the pre-order and shipping dates for the iPhone 12 Pro are set for sometime in November.
How safe is any of this?
None of this is safe. This is all conjecture that we can suggest based on previous iPhone launches, a variety of leaks, and Apple’s specific way of announcing this, but these are strange times with the world trying to cope with Covid-19.
Things may even have changed inside Apple headquarters since the July announcement, so there may even be a longer delay than expected. We won’t know anything for sure until we hear directly from Apple about their plans for an event.
If it happens, we’ll make sure to be one of the first to let you know.
