SINGAPORE: Up to 1,000 youth will soon have the opportunity to learn digital skills and gain placement opportunities to support digitization in the community and social sector organizations under a new program.
Announced by the Minister of Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong on Thursday (September 3), the YouthTech program is jointly created by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) and the National Council of Youth (NYC).
“It will equip 1,000 young people, firstly, with digital skills and training, and then it will deploy them in the community and the social services sector to help in these sectors to improve their skills and go digital,” said Mr. Tong in Parliament. .
The program aims to provide young people the opportunity to improve and gain work experience in the digital field.
At the same time, it will also seek to harness youth to support businesses and organizations in digital media, the arts, sports, the community, and social sectors, including social service agencies, charities, and faith and community organizations. youth sector, to become digital.
This follows MCCY’s appendix to the president’s speech last Friday, in which Mr. Tong announced the creation of a “digital body” to engage youth in pushing forward digitization efforts within the community and social sectors.

Deployments to host organizations will last between six and 12 months, depending on the organization’s needs, and will be overseen and supported by NYC and the host.
While the program is open to all youth, recent graduates from the Institute of Technical Education, polytechnics and universities will have priority, NYC said in a press release.
Unemployed people age 35 and younger in 2021 can also apply, regardless of their educational background or qualifications.
Applicants will be assessed for digital competence and attend the training for one month before being sent to their host organizations. This training will be provided by accredited organizations and funded by NYC, the council said.
Applications open in October and more details will be provided at a later date.
