SINGAPORE – A domestic worker convicted in Indonesia of the murder of a Singaporean couple did not like to be scolded and wanted to return to her home country because she was unhappy with her employers.
Khasanah, then 41, had no intention of causing the deaths of Chia Ngim Fong, 79, and Chin Sek Fah, 78, but had attacked them in response to their fighting, according to the state coroner’s findings on the death of the couple. on Wednesday (September 2).
State Coroner (SC) Kamala Ponnampalam noted that the Indonesian maid had been processed in Indonesia.
“The individual evidence from the link in the chain of circumstances supports the unavoidable conclusion that (the couple’s) death was the result of an unlawful homicide perpetrated at the hands of their domestic employee Khasanah. It was a cruel and ruthless attack on their elderly and defenseless employers, ”said SC Kamala. According to an autopsy report, Chia died of blunt force trauma to the head, while Chin suffered blunt force trauma to the head and chest.
Khasanah is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in Indonesia for the couple’s murder. Indonesian courts had sentenced her to life in prison, but she appealed and the Jakarta High Court reduced her sentence to 20 years on August 15, 2018.
Khasanah began working for the couple on May 25, 2017. Chia had difficulty walking and needed support, while his wife was generally healthy.
On June 21, 2017, Khasanah saw their passport while tidying up the closet of the son of the couple who lived with them. He then decided to run away because he didn’t like being scold by Chin.
Khasanah then tried to think of a way to get away without being stopped and decided to tie up the couple and cover their mouths with duct tape. He entered Chia’s room with the intention of gagging him. She thought that the old man would be drowsy from his medicine and couldn’t resist.
She found the man sleeping on his side in her bed, his back to her. Then he went over to Chia and covered her mouth with duct tape. When he began to tie her hands with raffia thread, Chia woke up and began to struggle, causing the duct tape to loosen. Chia started screaming.
In response, Khasanah turned on the television to drown out his screams and punched him in the face. When Chia kept fighting, her skin tore and began to bleed profusely. Seeing the blood, Khasanah panicked. He grabbed the wooden stool from the dresser and used it to repeatedly hit him on the head.
Chin, who was in the room at the time, pushed the maid from behind. Khasanah then turned around and pushed the old woman, who fell into the private bathroom and hit her head against the wall. While on the ground, Khasanah bound his limbs with a raffia rope and anchored it to the towel rail.
Chin continued to fight and Khasanah stepped on her body while holding onto the sink until the woman froze. He then covered his victims’ mouths with towels and secured the towels with duct tape.
Khasanah then took his passport, cash and other items, and fled to Batam by ferry at the Singapore Cruise Center on Harbourfront. The ferry left Singapore at 1:20 p.m.
Around two thirty in the afternoon, Khasanah called his employment agency with an unknown number. He said he was wrong and asked the residents of the apartment to return home immediately before hanging up. Sensing that something was wrong, the staff of the employment agency alerted the couple’s daughter, who tried to call her mother, and the home phone, without success. Then the daughter told her husband to check on her parents.
Before the murder of his parents, the couple’s son had left for work around 9 a.m. He was only alerted to the incident through his sister, who informed him that his parents had been found unconscious in their Bedok apartment, with Khasanah missing.
By the time the son returned home, police officers were processing the apartment as a crime scene. Belongings were missing, including $ 500 worth of cash, jewelry, a phone and watches, and a laptop with a portable keyboard. He hadn’t noticed anything unusual about Khasanah’s behavior prior to the incident.
Khasanah said he intended to sell the money for items. She told investigators that she did not intend to cause the couple’s death and only assaulted them while they were fighting. She also admitted calling the employment agency after the incident.
