SINGAPORE – The Ministry of Health (MINSA) confirmed 40 new cases of COVID-19 as of Tuesday (September 1), bringing the country’s total to 56,852.

Of the 40 cases, 37, or 92.5 percent, are asymptomatic and have been proactively detected through screening and surveillance, the ministry said.

There is one case in the community, which is the holder of a work pass, as well as seven imported cases, including three Singaporean residents and a one-year-old girl.

The remaining 32 cases are foreign workers living in dormitories, of which 22 had previously been identified as contacts from previous cases and had already been quarantined.

Overall, 2 percent of new cases have no established links.

The only community case, which is currently unrelated and asymptomatic, was detected through the routine tests listed on workers in the construction, marine and process sectors living outside of dormitories.

Epidemiological investigations into the case are ongoing, while all identified close contacts of the case have been isolated and quarantined, and will be evaluated at the beginning and end of their quarantine period.

“We will also carry out serological tests for her household contacts to determine if she may have been infected by them,” said the Ministry of Health.

Of the seven imported cases, three are Singaporean or permanent residents who returned to Singapore from India on August 16 and the United States on August 18.

Two other cases are job pass holders currently employed in Singapore who arrived from Bangladesh and Brazil on August 16. Another is a dependent’s pass holder who arrived from Bangladesh on August 16.

The remaining imported case is that of a one-year-old girl who is asymptomatic. She is a holder of a short-term visit pass from India whose parents are RP.

All imported cases were placed on the 14-day stay-at-home notice upon arrival here and tested while serving their notice at specialized facilities, the Health Ministry said.

The ministry noted that the number of new cases in the community has increased, from an average of two cases per day in the previous week, to an average of three per day in the last week.

The number of unrelated cases in the community has been stable at an average of one case per day in the past two weeks, he added.

The remaining 10 cases were detected by surveillance tests.

In addition to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, or smear, serological tests were also performed to determine if some of these cases are current or past infections.

“The results of the serological tests of nine cases have so far tested positive, indicating probable past infections,” the ministry added.

Overall, these workers account for 94.5 percent, or 53,695 cases, of Singapore’s total COVID-19 count.
