SINGAPORE: Crew members aboard a ship with a group of COVID-19 that arrived in Singapore from Malaysia in August did not disembark other than healthy certificates, the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) said on Wednesday (2 of September).

On Monday, the Malaysian Ministry of Health reported a new cluster of COVID-19 involving crew members of a ship that traveled from Singapore and called at Port Dickson in Negeri Sembilan state.

All 36 crew members on board were tested on August 28, and four tested positive for COVID-19. The four confirmed cases comprise two Malaysians and two non-citizens.

“MPA understands that the ship in Port Dickson with four crew members who tested positive for COVID-19 has been in Malaysia since August 16,” he said in response to inquiries from CNA.

“This ship arrived in Singapore from Port Dickson on August 13 for fueling and refueling and departed Singapore on August 15. As of August 16, MPA understands that the ship sailed between the port of Kerteh, Malaysia and the port of Dickson for cargo operations.

“The ship has been in Port Dickson since August 26 with 11 new crew members enrolled on the ship on August 27.”

During their stay in Singapore from August 13-15, six crew members who were certified healthy signed up and returned home, MPA said.

“The remaining crew members did not disembark from the ship. There was one crew that checked in in Singapore. They were isolated for 14 days and tested negative before leaving for Singapore.”

“He was transported directly from the airport to the vessel,” MPA said, adding that he was not among the four crew members who tested positive.

Malaysia’s director general of health, Noor Hisham Abdullah, said that as the confirmed cases were an imported group “isolated” on a ship, there was no risk of infection for the community.
