SINGAPORE – An Indonesian maid who killed and robbed an elderly couple in Bedok in 2017 will spend 20 years in jail in her home country after a trial there for the double murder.
The Indonesian court ruling was revealed on Tuesday (September 1) in an investigation by a coroner into the deaths of Mr. Chia Ngim Fong, 79, and his wife, Mrs. Chin Sek Fah, 78.
Singapore’s forensic court heard that the maid Khasanah, who has only one name, was originally sentenced to life in prison in Indonesia, but had her sentence reduced on appeal.
Khasanah, who escaped to Indonesia after the crime, was not handed over to the Singapore authorities despite the fact that her crimes were committed here.
Instead, the Indonesian National Police (Polri) worked with the Singapore Police (SPF) to solve the crime, The Straits Times previously reported.
Khasanah, then 41, was not sent to Singapore due to the principle of personaliteit, which requires that any Indonesian arrested in the country for a crime committed abroad be prosecuted in Indonesia rather than being sent to the jurisdiction where it was committed. the crime.
Khasanah, who came from Java, had worked for the couple for about a month before the killings.
They were found bound and unconscious in their five-room executive floor in Block 717 Bedok Reservoir Road on June 21, 2017.
In the coroner’s investigation Tuesday, SPF Assistant Superintendent Mahathir Mohamad investigating officer told state coroner Kamala Ponnampalam that Chia had suffered blunt trauma to the head, while Madam Chin suffered blunt trauma to the head and the chest.
The court heard that Khasanah departed for Indonesia by ferry from HarbourFront Center at 1.20pm on June 21, 2017 after killing the couple and robbing them.
ASP Mahathir said that after fleeing, Khasanah was in an internet cafe in Indonesia when they heard her talking to someone on the phone about her crimes.
Indonesian police were alerted and on June 28, 2017, arrested in Tungkal Ilir, Sumatra’s Jambi province after raiding her room at the Nanber Hotel.
Tungkal Ilir is a city in West Tanjung Jabung, about a three-hour drive from the provincial capital, Jambi, and more than 300 km from Singapore.
Among the items found in his possession were various pieces of jewelry, watches, mobile phones, a laptop, and cash worth no more than $ 300 in various currencies.
The hotel owner had previously said that Khasanah was planning to leave for Java.
ASP Mahathir told the court on Tuesday that Khasanah’s murder trial took place in an Indonesian court between February 27 and May 2, 2018. She was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.
This sentence was reduced to 20 years in jail after an appeal on August 15 of that year. The reasons for this reduction were not disclosed in court on Tuesday.
State Coroner Kamala will release his findings Wednesday.
