SINGAPORE – A ventilation duct fell from the ceiling of a movie theater in Nex Shopping on Sunday (August 30) during a movie, injuring two people.
A spokesperson for Shaw Theaters said the conduit in Hall 6 was cleared around 4.45pm.
Theater staff tended to injured clients until paramedics arrived, he said, adding that the two were later taken to hospital.
“Our priority is to provide support to our injured customers,” the spokesperson said, adding that the company is working with owner Gold Ridge and authorities to investigate the incident.
The Nex theater will be closed until further notice, he added.
A Nex spokesperson said they are aware of the “collapse of the ceiling in one of the Shaw Theaters movie theaters within the mall.”
“We are currently working closely with our tenant Shaw Theaters to support ongoing investigations as well as stakeholders,” he added.
When The Straits Times arrived at the venue at 7 p.m., the theaters were half closed.
Moviegoers were turned away and given coupons to see their movies at another theater.
Coupons are valid for one month and can be claimed for any movie at any time.
One customer, who just wanted to be known as Ms. Sim, had tickets to see Tenet at 7:50 pm and received a coupon.
“I don’t have anything planned for the night, so I’ll look for other movie times for Tenet near the area, maybe at the Seletar mall,” he said.
