SINGAPORE: Two people were injured after a ventilation shaft collapsed during a movie at Shaw Theaters in the NEX mall on Sunday afternoon (August 30).
The incident took place in Hall 6 of the theater at around 4.45 pm, a Shaw Theaters spokesperson told CNA.
“Unfortunately, two clients were injured. They were quickly treated by our staff and then by paramedics who arrived. They were later transferred to the hospital,” the spokesperson said.
Shaw Theaters is “shocked” by the incident and is working with its owner, Gold Ridge, and authorities to fully investigate the circumstances, it said.
“Our priority is to support our injured clients,” the spokesperson said.
Shaw Theaters said on its website that the theater at NEX will be closed until further notice.
The theater blinds were partially lowered when CNA arrived at the scene. There were also posters informing the public of the closing of the cinema.
A senior security officer who wanted to be identified as Ms. Shaarinee told CNA that a bystander suffered “minor injuries.”
Photos circulating on social media showed part of an air vent system that had collapsed in several rows of theater seats.
Other images showed Singapore Civil Defense (SCDF) agents at the scene. In one photo, officers could be seen carrying an injured person on a stretcher.
In another photo, two men are seen helping a woman who is lying on the carpeted floor, clutching her head.
CNA has approached the police and SCDF for more information.
