Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he has yet to decide on Rhian Brewster’s future, vowing to take his time to help the forward’s development.
Brewster it is one of the greatest prospects to emerge from the prestigious Liverpool academy in recent years. However, he has only played three matches with the first team in cup competitions so far.
The forward spent the second half of last season on loan at Swansea in the Championship, where he scored 11 goals in 22 games. And Brewster has made a comeback in the preseason with Liverpool, scoring in his first two friendlies.
Despite his potential, Brewster may have to go on loan again to continue his development. Recent reports suggested that Sheffield United was interested in the 20-year-old.; Tottenham has also been linked.
However, when asked if Brewster was part of his first team’s plans before Liverpool’s clash with Arsenal in the Community Shield, Klopp admitted that he is still weighing his options.
Klopp responded: “At the moment, it is. We will have to see what will happen in the coming weeks.
“We want to use Rhian and we also want to help Rhian, so we have to make decisions, but not now.
“It looks really promising. Goals are the most important thing in the world of football and obviously you can score goals.
“He is still a child. Especially in his position, as number nine, experience helps a lot.
“We have to see how we can give him experience. Is it here or somewhere else?
“I only mention it because it is not decided yet. There is absolutely no reason to rush anything.
“He’s our boy and for now, by the time he’s here, tomorrow he’ll be involved in the team, that’s for sure, and that’s it.”
Klopp also said in his press conference that he is not considering Saturday’s game against Arsenal as a friendly, even though Community Shield is considered by many to be just that.
The Liverpool manager should have a strong team at his disposal, after revealing that Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Xherdan Shaqiri look “good”.
Harry Wilson and Virgil Van Dijk should also be available for Klopp. However, the German tactician admitted that he will have to wait until game day to decide whether Trent Alexander-Arnold can play.
The right-back is “very close” to being fit, Klopp said, but no decision will be made until Saturday.
Liverpool will look to beat FA Cup champions Arsenal to clinch the Community Shield. The Reds lost on penalties to Manchester City in last season’s opening act.
KLOPP REINFORCES WIJNALDUM’S QUESTIONS
Elsewhere in his press conference, Klopp declined to shed light on any developments with Georginio Wijnaldum’s contract situation.
The Dutch midfielder’s contract expires next summer and Barcelona are interested in him. But Klopp wasn’t disclosing anything when asked for an update.
“That is an open contract situation, obviously. Otherwise, you would know, ”Klopp said.
“And that means we don’t talk about it. I never did it at press conferences, so why should I change that? “
