JAKARTA: The city of Jakarta administration imposed a fine of Rs 10 million (US $ 670) on a deceased McDonald’s outlet for violating the city’s social restrictions order.

The store at Sarinah Mall in downtown Jakarta closed its doors on Sunday night (May 10) after nearly 30 years in business. The store was Indonesia’s first McDonald’s restaurant.

At least 300 people came to the restaurant to see employees close the store for the last time.

The presence of the crowd had allegedly violated Jakarta’s large-scale social restrictions established to curb the spread of COVID-19. Under the restraining order, a gathering of more than five people is prohibited.

In a statement released Thursday, the Jakarta Law Enforcement Agency said the establishment’s management was called in for questioning earlier in the day.

“During the interrogation, the Jakarta Law Enforcement Agency explained how the administration has been negligent regarding the order of social restrictions,” the statement said.

The McDonald’s store, the agency continued, “admitted its negligence” in failing to take preventive measures to prevent a large crowd from gathering.

“In light of this incident, we hope that in the future companies and people in Jakarta will be more disciplined in obeying the order of social restrictions,” the agency said.

Despite claiming that the meeting was not planned and was not initiated by the restaurant, McDonald’s Indonesia had broadcast the store closure live on their Instagram account.

Employees were seen bowing to the cheering crowd after the restaurant closed.

The establishment was closed because the state-owned shopping center it was located in would be renovated starting next month.

The mall is also adjusting its retail mix in favor of Indonesian franchises, as well as small and medium-sized businesses when the renovation is complete in 2021.

Police have previously said they will not fine people who attended Sunday’s event.
