KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 – Bersatu President Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad does not mind being removed from his party position as long as it is done legally in accordance with the party constitution and regulations rather than a back door movement to eject it.
In a video posted on his Facebook page today, the Langkawi legislator said that even when he presided over Umno and was about to eliminate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the late 1990s, he still gave the latter courtesy to attend the meeting and speak up for him
“And we have found many bad actions that have been committed in the attempt to eliminate me. I don’t mind being retired, but retreat in accordance with the laws and the party constitution. Even if you want to remove me, please invite me.
“When I chaired Umno and the Supreme Council wanted to eliminate Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, he was invited and given the opportunity to speak during the meeting. But they don’t even want me there and allow me to speak, “said Dr. Mahathir.
He also noted that the call for the party’s Supreme Council (MPT) to meet on May 11 before it was postponed to a later date was illegal on multiple levels.
According to the Bersatu constitution, the only person authorized to call the MPT meeting was the party president, a post held by Dr. Mahathir. Party chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is only authorized to call the meeting if the chairman is unavailable, ill, or out of the country.
Furthermore, Dr. Mahathir noted that the Bersatu MPT is his MPT and by not inviting him or his son, the party’s vice president, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, the meeting is not legitimate in the eyes of the party constitution.
He added that the invitation letter did not indicate any agenda or motion of the meeting, which is also incorrect, since the guests must know and be prepared for the topics to be discussed.
This is also a big mistake. I think Muhyiddin has been infected with Umno’s disease because he likes to do things without following the party constitution. For example, he still thinks that (Datuk Seri) Hamzah (Zainuddin) is the party’s general secretary.
“Hamzah cannot be the secretary general. Even if it is going to be named, according to the party constitution, I must first approve it. The MPT also has conditions for the former members of Umno to join the party.
“They must first leave Umno and be independent for a certain period of time. Then they can apply to join, and if they are accepted and are members of Bersatu, the former members of Umno cannot hold any office in the party yet, “argued Dr. Mahathir.
He explained that according to the party constitution and the previous decision, Datuk Marzuki Yahya from Penang remains the legitimate general secretary of Bersatu.
However, Muhyiddin had apparently gone against the party’s constitution by removing Dr. Mahathir’s supporter and replacing him with Hamzah on March 26.
The video also featured clippings from previous news, press conferences, and the party constitution that tests Dr. Mahathir’s words.
