BANGKOK: Thailand has reported no new cases of COVID-19 for the first time since March 9.

Dr. Thaweesilp Wisanuyothin, spokesman for Thailand’s COVID-19 Situation Management Center (CCSA), said on Wednesday (May 13) that this was the result of cooperation at the national level, while urging the public to continue respecting the government’s disease control measures.


“Now we can feel a little relaxed, but we should never let our guard down,” he said at a press conference. “We have all been working hard for this and now we can relax a little bit.”

Since Thailand imposed a curfew across the country between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. On April 3, new daily case numbers have remained stable.

According to Dr. Thaweesilp, the majority of new cases in the past two weeks have been detected through quarantine facilities, active community case-finding strategies, and people in close contact with COVID-19 patients.

“The investigated patients may not test positive today but may show symptoms tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. It can happen anywhere, ”he warned.

Thailand began to relax its closure measures on May 3 after the situation had improved.

Six types of activities and businesses benefited from partial relaxation while maintaining the requirements of social distancing. The Thai government is considering relaxing more measures within this week to allow more business premises to open.

However, the final decision depends on the new case numbers. If the numbers increase dramatically during this period, further relaxation of the blocking measures can be suspended.

Since January, Thailand has reported 3,017 cases of COVID-19. Her youngest patient was one month old and her oldest was 97.

So far, 2,844 patients have been discharged from hospitals and 56 have died. One hundred and seventeen people remain hospitalized.

According to Dr. Thaweesilp, the country has carried out more than 200,000 COVID-19 tests. As of May 1, 34,444 tests were taken and 63 of them were positive.
