SHANGHAI: The city of Jilin, in northeast China, is imposing new travel restrictions to contain a new COVID-19 outbreak, with six new cases reported on Tuesday (May 12).
Jilin has become the source of a possible new wave of infections and the neighboring city of Shulan was forced to adjust the risk level to “high” from “medium” over the weekend.

“The current situation for COVID-19 is quite complex and serious, and there is a great risk that the virus will spread further,” said Gai Dongping, deputy mayor of Jilin.
“To stop the spread of the epidemic, we have decided to implement control measures in the Jilin urban area,” he said at a press conference on Wednesday.
Five of the six new infections could be traced directly to a confirmed case in Shulan, where a cluster infection was previously identified, the local health commission said in a notice on Wednesday.

Jilin is the second largest city in Jilin Province, which borders North Korea and Russia. Now it will temporarily suspend passenger or departure train services.

The Chinese National Health Commission on Tuesday reported a total of seven new confirmed cases of coronavirus, including an imported infection in Shanghai. It also confirmed eight new asymptomatic cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, up from 15 the day before.
Chinese health authorities have called for vigilance against the new coronavirus as new groups emerge, despite the peak of the epidemic having passed in the country where it first appeared.

In the past two weeks, new cases have been reported in seven provinces, including Hubei, the original epicenter of the outbreak at the end of last year.
