His last words to his father were through a text message.

About an hour later on Sunday night, Mr. Tay Rui Hao, 38, was found stabbed near the Punggol field, just two blocks from where he lived.

He died in the hospital shortly after.

His father, Mr. Tay Shu Sen, 70, said his son had told him that he felt bad about being locked up at home during the circuit breaker and that he would go running.

On Sunday he went running around 10 p.m. and a resident found him bleeding heavily at 11 p.m.

Police have classified the case as murder and investigations are ongoing.

His father said he ran to the hospital with his wife and daughter at 1 a.m., but it was too late.

Speaking to the Chinese newspapers Lianhe Wanbao and Shin Min Daily News, the retiree said: “My wife is very excited now and cannot accept the fact that the son is gone.”

He added that Mr. Tay had not been working from the switch and would be running two or three times a week.

“He suffered a leg injury while playing soccer many years ago. He often ran at night and sometimes his wife accompanied him.”

Mr. Tay Shu Sen said that his son was calm and talkative. As the location of the incident was dimly lit at night, he suspects it could be a case of mistaken identity.

“My son was only 38 years old and he was a good person. He lost his life like that. It is an injustice.”

The friends also paid tribute to Mr. Tay. Former colleagues uploaded photos and video montages of him on Facebook, thanking him for his friendship and mentoring.

The New Paper understands that he was a manager of a Candylicious candy store in Dubai from 2009 to 2012.

His former colleague from the Candylicious store, Ms. Shameega Adams, 37, who works in Dubai, was crying when he heard the news.

She told TNP: “He had great character and could get along with anyone. He was a great mentor and leader to many of us. I always learned something from him.”

TNP understands that Mr. Tay’s most recent job was at the Nike sporting goods company in Singapore.

He celebrated his wife’s birthday at home last month, and they have a pet dog named Coco.

He was cremated yesterday afternoon at the Mandai crematorium.

Anyone with information about the murder should call the police hotline at 1800-255-0000 or submit information via police.gov.sg/iwitness
