A 38-year-old man who suffered multiple stab wounds in the Punggol camp on Sunday night died, in a case classified by the police as murder.

A person who spoke to the man before he was sent to the hospital said he appeared to have run out before being attacked.

Police said they received a call for assistance around 11 p.m. Sunday. The man was injured and transferred to Sengkang General Hospital, they said.

The man later died. He is believed to be married and working for a multinational sportswear company.

A resident who lives in Block 227A Sumang Lane, in front of the scene of the incident, called the police. He told The Straits Times yesterday that he heard a cry for help while having a late night snack in his living room.

The resident, who wanted to be known only as Mr. Leong, 49, said: “At first it didn’t occur to me that (the cry for help) was coming from below, at the park connector. So I hesitated for a while. So much, and then I heard a second cry for help. “

He said he went to his window to look outside and saw a kneeling man, then standing and walking to the back of a bus stop, where he collapsed on a patch of grass.

“I decided to go downstairs to see what was going on. I thought that maybe the man had been injured or was having a heart attack,” said Leong, who works as a member of an airline’s cabin crew.

He added that there was a lot of blood at the scene, “all over the bus stop.”

He remembered asking the man if he was attacked, and the man said yes.

“He kept saying he was losing his breath, so I told him to relax and calm down, that help is coming,” he added.

Officers from the Gurkha police contingent searched the undeveloped terrain in the Punggol camp, where a 38-year-old man was stabbed on Sunday night. The man later died of his injuries at Sengkang General Hospital. The case has been classified.

When the ambulance arrived, Mr. Leong noted that the man had a “deep cut” on the right side of his armpit. He added that the man looked like he had run out. “He was not wearing a mask and was wearing a soccer jersey and running shoes,” he said.

Police are also reviewing surveillance footage in the area, he said, urging the public to share any information if they were near the scene.

“Our thoughts go to the victim’s loved ones. My deepest condolences,” he said.

Speaking to ST, Ms. Sun said the incident occurred alongside an undeveloped parcel of land that is slated to become an educational institution.

Residents use the bus stop to get to the bus interchange, he added.

Yesterday, police officers, including the Gurkha contingent, were seen combing the area while the bus stop was cordoned off.
