BEIJING: China’s health authority said on Tuesday (May 12) that the reappearance of local groups of COVID-19 cases in recent days suggests that measures against the epidemic have yet to be relaxed.

While prevention and control efforts have been normalized, that does not mean that measures can be facilitated, Mi Feng, spokesman for the National Health Commission, said at a press conference.

A new group reappeared over the weekend in Wuhan City, where the pandemic broke out, while the city of Shulan, in the northeast of the country, was closed on Sunday after another outbreak emerged.

NO NEW DOMESTIC CASES

China did not report new domestic COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, after two consecutive days of double-digit increases that raised fears of a second wave of infections.

China has largely controlled the virus, but remains nervous, fearful that a second wave may undermine its efforts to get the economy back on track.

A day earlier, China announced the first double-digit increase in cases nationwide in nearly 10 days, saying 14 new infections had been confirmed. Wuhan also saw his first new case in more than a month.

For the 27th consecutive day, no deaths were reported. An imported case was registered.

The official death toll in the country remains at 4,633, while the total number of infections on the continent is 82,919.
