MOSCOW: Russia’s coronavirus cases surpassed Italian and British infections on Monday (May 11) to become the third highest in the world after a record daily rise in hours before President Vladimir Putin reviewed the blockade regime from the country.

The official count increased to 221,344, meaning that Russia now has more registered cases than Italy or Great Britain and is only following Spain and the United States, as the number of new cases of the new coronavirus increased by 11,656 in the past 24 hours. .

More than half of all cases and deaths are in Moscow, the epicenter of the Russian outbreak. On Monday, it reported a nightly increase of 6,169 new cases, bringing its official total to 115,909.

The country’s coronavirus response center also reported 94 new deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 2,009 people. The official death toll remains much lower than in many countries, something critics of the Kremlin have consulted.

Russian authorities attribute the growing and large number of cases to a massive testing program that they say has carried out more than 5.6 million tests.

Putin is expected to hold a meeting on Monday, a public holiday in Russia, to decide whether to modify the country’s blockade regime that came into effect in late March.
