KULAI – A husband and wife were killed while their two children survived with minor injuries when their car crashed into a tree on KM20.8 of the North-South Freeway (NSE) here (southbound).

Kulai Substitute OCPD Tok Beng Yeow said the deceased have been identified as Herry Mohd Ali, 43, and Khairrunisa Azman, 34, while their two children are six and four.

The accident occurred around 11 p.m. Saturday (May 9) when the family returned to Johor Baru from Muar.

“The investigation revealed that the rear tire on the left side of the car exploded, causing the driver to lose control of his vehicle. He veered from the right lane into the left lane for 100 meters before hitting a tree,” he said.

“The driver and passenger in the front were trapped inside the vehicle while the children were thrown outside due to the impact,” Supt Tok added in a statement on Sunday (May 10).

The accident was noticed by the PLUS maintenance department around 10.40 on Sunday morning (May 10), and the Kulai Hospital medical team stated that the husband and wife were dead at the scene.

The Fire and Rescue Department removed both bodies at around 11:15 am, and all the injured bodies and victims were taken to Kulai Hospital for autopsy or further treatment.

The case is investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Highway Transportation Act of 1987.

Meanwhile, Kulai Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Bakhtiar Selamat said nine people were deployed to the scene with a fire truck and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) van.
