A man in Hong Kong died the day after police used what they described as an appropriate force to arrest him for criminal damage, drug possession and assault officers.
The force said Yau Tsim district officers patrolling Nathan Road were called at 5 p.m. Thursday by members of the public who reported that a non-Chinese man who “smelled strongly of alcohol” had damaged a moving vehicle. with a glass bottle and it had fallen off. on a nearby motorcycle.
The suspect “fiercely resisted” when he was detained by officers and searched. A spokesman for the police public relations office said bystanders aided the officers and used “appropriate force” to subdue the man before finding four grams of a substance believed to be heroin in him.
The man was detained on suspicion of criminal damage, drug possession, and assault on police officers. He was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei by ambulance after feeling unwell and was pronounced dead 24 hours later, at approximately 5.45pm on Friday.
Officers have contacted eyewitnesses and are conducting a full investigation at the scene. The force will organize an autopsy later to determine the cause of death, “the spokesman said.
The case is being handled by the West Kowloon Regional Crime Unit by force.
