Hong Kong actress and singer Gillian Chung separated from her Taiwanese-American husband Michael Lai after less than two years of marriage.

Chung, 39, met Lai in 2017 and fell in love with him. The couple held lavish weddings in Los Angeles and Hong Kong in 2018, and even appeared on a Chinese reality show called Parenting Class.

The couple had signed the divorce documents on March 1, and Lai reportedly revealed that Chung was the one who initiated the divorce process. He claimed that Chung had thought about divorcing soon after getting married, as he felt that he did not know him well enough.

Lai also hinted that Chung no longer loves him anymore. In a lengthy social media post, he wrote: “When I think of 2018 after our wedding in Los Angeles, you were suddenly cold. I asked you why and you told me you were sorry (our marriage). You did not love me very much and you felt that you were not fit for marriage. We argued for a long time and decided to give our relationship another chance.

“In March of this year, you called me and said, ‘Sorry, I thought I would fall in love with you slowly after marriage, but I really couldn’t do it.’ When I received your signed separation agreement, my feelings went from sadness to anger to loss, and finally to acceptance of reality. I think life is like that. Although I still can’t believe it; but thanks for telling me your true feelings so we can walk into our separate future. “

Chung confirmed their divorce through a statement through his management agency, Emperor Entertainment Group, and cited the lifestyle differences behind their separation. She added that this is a private matter between her and Lai. They continue to respect each other and will not answer any questions related to their marriage.

In 2018, rumors emerged that Lai was cheating on Chung after multiple videos showed him dining with two women. He had to clarify that Chung knew both women, of whom one was the socialite Janet Yang.

Lai is also said to have been too busy with work to accompany her on an IVF appointment with her.
