SINGAPORE – Police arrested a 40-year-old Singaporean woman for not wearing her face mask properly, assaulted a police officer, and insulted staff at the Sun Plaza shopping center on Thursday (May 7).
In a post published on the Facebook page of the Singapore Police Force on Friday, police said they received a request for assistance from a crowd management staff deployed by Sun Plaza around 2.10pm on Thursday.
Staff said a woman did not cooperate and refused to wear her mask correctly at the mall. Despite repeated requests from staff to wear her mask correctly, she refused to do so.
The woman also insulted the staff and threw vulgarities at a security officer who came to help. Her actions were filmed and circulated on online social media platforms, showing her taunting a mall employee and asking him to remove his mask to speak to her.
When police officers arrived and asked for her identity, the woman began removing the address tag from her identity card. When one of the police officers tried to stop her, the woman assaulted the officer and did not cooperate. She was subsequently arrested.
Already fined before for not wearing a mask
The woman will be charged in court on Saturday for voluntarily causing harm to dissuade a public servant from doing his duty, and for using insulting or abusive language with the intent to cause harassment to another person.
If found guilty of the first crime, she can be jailed for up to seven years, and will also be subject to a fine or beating. If convicted of the second offense, you can be jailed for up to six months and / or fined up to $ 5,000.
The woman will also be investigated for not wearing her mask properly under COVID-19 Regulations 2020 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order). She was already fined $ 300 for not wearing a mask at the same mall on April 29.
