Thammasat University has offered laboratory tests at Allied Health Sciences to support work in the hospital, delivering accurate and rapid results.
The University is providing resources to help during the national crisis due to COVID-19 and has opened laboratory tests for COVID-19 that support Thammasat University Hospital and neighboring hospitals. It can provide results in 6 hours.
Dr. Assoc Prof. Pailawan Satthanon, Director of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, reveals that due to the COVID-19 transmission outbreak, Thammasat University, as a popular university, has put all its knowledge and resources to support the government. One of our supports is the molecular diagnostic laboratory, the Health Services Center, the Allied Health Sciences College, which can be used to evaluate COVID-19 and deliver results in 6 hours. The laboratory is used to support Thammasat University Hospital and other nearby hospitals.
“Originally, the Thammasat University Hospital and other hospitals have to send samples to the central sector, which is the Department of Medical Sciences to analyze. Time is wasted as we have to queue for tests and wait for the result to be sent back to the hospital. Therefore, it can take up to a day. As a result, the laboratory of the Allied Health Sciences College provides convenience to the area in Rangsit-Pathum Thani, “said Assoc.Prof.Dr.Pailawan.
The quality and standard of the laboratory in the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences are in the highest class in the country. The laboratory has been certified by the Department of Medical Sciences of the Ministry of Public Health to evaluate COVID-19. Therefore, if the Thammasat University Hospital and other hospitals send the samples, the result will be ready in a short period of time. When we can know the result of the test quickly, the potential of the treatment will be better. Currently, we only perform a test on samples submitted by hospitals; There is no regulation for individual service testing.
The Assistant to Prof. Dr. Jerapong Tanongsaksrikul, Deputy Director of Administration and Head of the molecular diagnostic laboratory, says that the laboratory has been used for Tuberculosis (TB) tests. Tuberculosis disease is more serious than COVID-19, therefore we can be sure of the standard and potential of the laboratory. Asst.Prof.Dr.Jeerapong also says that the solution for virus testing used by the lab is very accurate. It can be used to test the virus very quickly and it only requires 3 genes in a tube to reduce errors.
“We are educational institutions. Most of the people in the laboratory are professors and scientists in medical laboratories with testing experience. In addition, we are honored by Prof. Ph.D. Yong Phoovorawan, an Expert in Clinical Virology in Thailand, for helping us advise us. There are also experts from the biosecurity association who help ensure security. So this is our confidence to work in the Thammasat laboratory. “Said Asst.Prof.Dr.Jeerapong.
Prof. Dr. Prof. Jeeerapong says that the Thammasat laboratory will maintain negative air pressure that can only be found in educational institutions and large hospitals. Everything in the lab will be filtered by high level filtration which can filter out the smallest particles. Therefore, working in this laboratory, there would be no contamination leaving the room. In the first phase, the laboratory can perform tests for 40-50 samples per day.
Associate Professor Gasine Witoonchart, director of Thammasat University, says Thammasat is capable of performing COVID-19 tests by using real-time RT-PCR to detect the genetic material of the virus. The test is under the supervision of talented medical laboratory scientists and teachers. The molecular diagnostics laboratory at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences is biosafety level 2. The laboratory has negative air pressure and a standard working procedure. Therefore, we hope to be able to further support hospitals in neighboring areas.
The Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory, Center for Health Services, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, offers a testing service only for samples submitted by hospitals. No tests for individuals are available yet. For a nearby hospital that you would like to send samples for testing, please contact 02-986-9213-9, 7277 and 7686 during the business day.
