No relegation if no more Premier League games, says Brighton owner

REUTERS: A relegation from the English Premier League is unlikely if the season ends with no further game possible due to the coronavirus outbreak, Brighton and Hove Albion owner Tony Bloom told the British media.

Premier League clubs met on Friday to discuss possible models for ending the season, but all options remained hypothetical after the UK government extended the blocking restrictions for another three weeks.

Brighton was two points from the relegation zone with nine games remaining when the league stopped on March 13.

If the season ended with no further game possible, Liverpool would claim the title and Norwich City, Aston Villa and Bournemouth would be the only ones to fall.

The decline marks a financial blow somewhere in the $ 100 million region, and Bloom thought the required 70 percent of clubs were unlikely to vote to send all three teams.

“It would be very difficult to relegate someone, particularly from the Premier League, if the season does not unfold,” said Bloom.

“You can get a title winner, obviously Liverpool deserves it, you can use that criteria for the European qualification, but I don’t see how anyone can vote for that, certainly the percentage necessary for the teams to be relegated.”

With some teams with more games remaining than others, another proposal is for a club’s final position to be decided by the average number of points they have earned per game.

Bloom thought that option was even less likely to be successful.

“I do not foresee a situation, if the season does not develop, the teams will be relegated by points,” he said.

“I just don’t think it is unimaginable that a team that is not allowed to play the season could lose 0.2 points based on this system, nor does it take into account the strength of the team that has not played.” “
