SINGAPORE – Two young men were arrested for allegedly cheating victims of $ 30,000 by pretending to sell Nintendo Switch consoles in Carousell.

The men, ages 19 and 20, are believed to have scammed more than 80 people, police said Monday (April 13). They would become irrepressible after their victims had paid them by bank transfer.

Console prices have soared lately, from around $ 200 to nearly $ 650, as more people have had to stay indoors during the coronavirus outbreak.

While the police did not specify the price at which the youths allegedly offered the consoles, they warned people not to be drawn to unrealistic prices.

“If the price is too good to be true, it probably is,” they said.

Police said when the two men were arrested on Sunday and Monday, only one Nintendo Switch console was found in their homes. This was seized, along with various mobile phones and SIM cards.

Police are still investigating the 19-year-old, but hope to charge the 20-year-old with a fraud on Tuesday. If found guilty, you can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined.

In their statement, the police said that people should be wary of vendors who offer a better or faster deal if bank transfer payments are made directly to them. They said that buyers should choose options where payment is only released to the buyer at the time of product delivery.
