51 Indians among 191 new cases of coronavirus in Singapore

Singapore authorities are working to improve living conditions in the bedrooms.

Singapore:

Fifty-one Indian citizens working in Singapore are among the 191 new cases of coronavirus reported on Saturday, bringing the total number of COVID-19 patients in the city-state to 2,299.

The Health Ministry said a 90-year-old Singaporean man died of complications from the COVID-19 infection on Saturday morning, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus to eight.

The 191 new patients contracted the coronavirus locally, he said, adding that 51 infections were connected to dormitories for foreign workers.

The first case of the bedrooms was reported on March 29. Thirty-one patients with COVID-19 are in critical condition in the intensive care units of the 943 hospitalized.

Thirty-five patients have been discharged from hospitals or placed in community isolation facilities as of Saturday, the ministry said.

In all, 528 patients have fully recovered, he added.

Fourteen additional cases are linked to infected people from the Indian-owned mega store Mustafa Center, which has been declared a group with a total of 78 confirmed cases. The store has been closed for disinfection.

Singapore authorities are working to improve living conditions in the dormitories and relocate workers to other accommodations, including vacant floors of the Housing Development Board and Army facilities, according to local media reports.
