As part of the improved safe distance measures against transmission of COVID-19, SMRT is in discussion with the Ground Transportation Authority (LTA) on specific measures to limit the number of passengers on SMRT buses.

According to the CNA, a notice was circulating on social media saying that bus captains will limit passengers to a maximum of 10 on a single-decker bus and up to 16 passengers on a double-decker bus on the exchange as of Friday (April 10).

For this, SMRT’s director of bus operations, Vincent Gay, told CNA that the notification was submitted “prematurely” by his staff for internal reference. The notice has since been withdrawn.

On Thursday (April 9), LTA announced that it will launch safe distancing stickers on public transportation as an elevated measure of safe distancing to increase social distancing among commuters.

The decals will be progressively placed on all trains, train stations, buses, bus stops, and bus interchanges to mark spaces and seats that travelers should avoid, according to the LTA.

In addition to this, LTA is also working with public transportation operators to organize transportation ambassadors who will work with LTA compliance officers and bus captains to ensure travelers comply with the measures.

Other precautionary measures such as detecting the temperature at selected MRT stations and encouraging members of the public to wear reusable masks will also be implemented during this “circuit breaker” period that will last until May 4.
